A pendant is a type of necklace in which a jewel, fob or jeweled motif hangs on an otherwise unadorned chain. Dramatic pendants can be made from large single crystals or gemstones with little in the way of a setting, just a simple attachment so that the jewel can be strung on a chain. Due to the extent to which the design of a pendant can be incorporated into an overall necklace it is not always accurate to treat them as separate items. Other pendants feature heavy worked silver or gold settings with an array of colored jewels in elaborate combinations. Pendants are among the oldest recorded types of bodily adornment. It is necessary to establish criteria, such as size, color, material, and shape, for selecting pendants based on what the final product is intended to be.
